This page will connect you to several types of Reading Matter, including Books, published Scripts, and Articles, as well as a few pages written for students in our Screenwriting Classes. After a brief introductory note, the links below will take you to whichever area(s) you'd like to explore.

BOOKS

There are dozens and dozens of books on library and bookstore shelves (and online, for that matter, at Amazon, com) on the subject of the craft and business of screenwriting, from how to do it properly and/or well (opinions differ) to how to sell it (again, there is more than one school of thought), to finding someone to sell it for you (agents and other lifeforms)to what to do once you have sold it (besides cash the check).

I have compiled a couple of lists of books for you to consider. The first is what I might call my Top Ten, the ones I would recommend most to screenwriters, especially those learning (or relearning) the craft or trying to break in. I won't say they are all the best books ever written on the subject (for one thing, I haven't written mine yet), but they are ones I like and think you might, as well.

The second list is more of an online catalog, a Virtual Bookstore, with more than a hundred books that might be of interest and/or value to you. They can be perused in more detail or even ordered over the Internet, just by clicking on the icons.

SCRIPTS

There are literally thousands of screenplays out there that have published in one form or another. Some are in books, some are available in standard script form, and other may be downloaded from the Internet.

I have compiled a couple of lists of scripts for you to consider acquiring and reading. The first is the Writers Guild's Greatest 101 Scripts These are, at least in the opinion of those who do this for a living, the best of the best. You're undoubtedly familiar with many if not most of them. You can learn something from seeing how the masters have done it.

The second list is all my own. It includes a fairly long list of films that I happen to love and think were made from great screenplays that are, for one reason or another, not on the Writers Guild list.

The third and fourth lists present the the last 60 years of Academy Award winners for Best Original Screenplay, and the last ten years of Golden Globe winners and contenders for Best Screenplay.

The last list is another online catalog, an additional Virtual Bookstore, with more than a hundred scripts that should be of interest and/or value to you. Like the Books, they can be perused in more detail or even ordered over the Internet, just by clicking on the icons.
