Each year, a few weeks before the Academy Awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announces its picks for best pictures,
performances and screenplays of the preceding year. While widely touted as harbingers of the upcoming Oscars, the truth is
that this is more hopeful thinking than hard reality. Nevertheless, the Golden Globes have gained a prestigious reputation
over the years and, in a number of cases, the Foreign Press Association has given recognition to efforts that were sometimes
out of the mainstream or overlooked by the Academy.
Listed below are not only the winners for Best Screenplay over the last decade, but the other contenders, as well. As
the titles indicate, it is sometimes surprising the number of truly great scripts that lost. Not to denigrate any of the other
writers named in contention, but consider that the brilliant work of Charlie Kaufman, for instance, was nominated 3 times
in 6 years, but lost each time. Go figure.
